With the advent of the Internet, there has been
an upsurge in the use of e-mails for sending notes, letters,
and what-have-you. Although faster and relatively cheaper,
e-mails still arguably lack the character and personality
given by conventional mail or snail mail. Thus, there is
still a large number of people who prefer to receive and
send their mail through "Mr. Postman".
Stamps inevitably come with conventional mail. They
often have images of presidents, historical figures, and
other historical places and objects on them. Unless the
stamps are classified as limited edition, people are rarely
able to use stamps which they actually like or that match
their personality.
Personalized stamps present an opportunity to
personalize one's mail correspondence by making stamps with
virtually any conceivable design. Consumers can upload their
images and designs to a website that provides stamp
publishing services. Some authorized vendors also allow
personal delivery and even custom designing. After uploading
or delivering your desired stamp images, these vendors and
service providers would make the necessary adjustments in
color and size then print your stamps.
However, not just any design can be made into a stamp. A
controversy involving several pranksters who printed
inappropriate images led to the passing of a stamp criteria.
The US Postal Service added a criteria for potential
personalized stamps vendors - a screening method. Designs
now must pass the screening process which follows Postal
Service rules and copyright laws. Vendors are required to
fully implement this screening process before printing any
stamps, to ensure the legality of personalized stamps.
